This is an extremely common and potentially serious issue on all models of the non-Quadrifoglio Giulia. Coolant hoses and bleeder screws near the bulkhead fail and end up spraying coolant across the whole engine bay. The fix is very easy if the bleeders are still in one piece, but if they’ve failed and fallen apart it can be a bit more involved to remove and replace.
You can purchase replacement metal bleeder screws from a number of vendors, including but not limited to GaleMotorSports (GMS).
Bleeder Screw Replacement
It’s a simple fix but can be a bit tricky if you don’t want to drop any parts requiring the removal of the under tray to get said fallen bits.
First make sure the engine is cold, hot coolant is no fun at all.
- Place some rags under the bleeders in order to catch anything that may fall.
- Using a pliers or your fingers to unscrew the bleeders, carefully remove trying not to pull on them. as they can be very brittle and snap off leaving a chunk in the brass threaded section.
- Replace with new metal bleeders. I used a long flat headed screwdriver with a ball of masking tape on the end to get the screws in place.
Coolant hose replacement/modification
Another very common failure point are the various plastic coolant lines that go to/from the expansion tanks. As far as I know, Alfa has not revised this part sufficiently and they will eventually crack.
- Replace the hard lines with 8mm (5/16") coolant hose using fuel line hose clamps as they provide full diameter clamping forces. The new hose will fit into the hose clips with a little force.
- Reuse the barbed end connectors as we haven’t been able to source replacements that fit.
- Next thing to do is remove, if present, the turbo coolant line bleeder. This part has been removed on newer models.
- Remove the section shown and reuse one of the OEM clamps if in good working condition.
